LETTER FROM THE EDITOR FASHION EDITION 2021

From as early as I can remember, memories of my grandparents showing me what it means to be Palestinian and what our culture means to my family have forever been engraved in my mind. Palestinian culture has been my entire life. Growing up with two Palestinian parents, I fell in love with the beauty of our culture, our language, our clothing, and food. I felt a connection deeper than the blood in my veins to this land I call home. Palestine, our home, was the foundation of who I was and who I continue to be. Consistently, I am finding myself remembering those memories with my grandparents, my trip to Palestine with family, and the rich culture that continues to consume me in the best ways.

As I grew, my love for my culture became only stronger. I had taken the leap of faith to start my own clothing brand, PaliApparel. Although the business side frightened me and made me question if I was ready, I knew deep down that showcasing my culture within fashion was what I wanted to do. Palestinian culture was something about myself I had always been proud of and continued to showcase through my life. Taking this next step and not only doing something I love but also showcasing what I love was the perfect mix for the next step in my life.

Palestinian fashion comes down to the single thread that creates a beautiful design, our roots weaved within each piece crafted by our people. It had become important to highlight not only our culture and fashion but also those behind the designs that have stories to share of their own roots and beginnings. 

Each creative highlighted within this issue has made not only an impact within the Palestinian fashion world, but they have also made an impact on my own life and journey. I hope you get a glimpse into these amazing individuals and teams that have lifted our community through fashion and continue to pioneer for the education and enlightenment of our fashion, our culture, our roots.

I use the slogan, “Powerful, Passionate, Palestinian,” for my clothing brand, but I believe this edition encompasses that, too. It lifts up each of the powerful creatives who are making statements within the fashion world — passionate designers and fashion professionals who continue to share their Palestinian culture with the world and make their voices heard.
